Background: Why is Zingerman's so Lovable?
by Chowgirls Boss Lady Heidi Andermack

When I met my soon-to-be business partner Amy Brown in 2003, we quickly bonded over similar aesthetic tastes in food and entertaining, namely Martha Stewart, Barefoot Contessa, and a delicatessen called Zingerman's.

Why were we both in love with a seemingly small deli in Ann Arbor, Michigan? Because Zingerman's is brilliant. They are marketing geniuses who hold high standards in food and business. In addition to their original deli, Zingerman's has expanded into a bakehouse, a creamery, a mail-order business, catering, and business consulting, i.e. a Community of Businesses that employs more than 450 people and generates sales over $30 million.

In 2003, Inc. Magazine named Zingerman's "The Coolest Small Company in America." And in 2007, the company was profiled in The New York Times as "The Corner Deli That Dared to Break Out of the Neighborhood." They are admired for their commitment to quality experiences and great service, management innovations, and a goal to leave the world better than it was when they arrived — a great model for any business venture.

What's impressive is how they run their ever-growing business with a personal approach that keeps employees happy and builds a truly unique brand. Even more impressive — they share their knowledge! Zingerman's has a training company — ZingTrain — that is nationally recognized for sharing tools and techniques that help businesses build up bottom-line results!

Bringing the ZingTrain to Minneapolis

I've been dying for Zingerman's trainings since we started Chowgirls in 2004. And now that we're in the throes of tightening our operations, Zingerman's wisdom is more important than ever before. How could we find the cash flow to make it so? If I went alone, would I be able to effectively communicate what I learned to everybody else in the kitchen? Maybe it'd be better to send the management staff? This is the kind of stuff that keeps me up at night.

Then, during one of my 3 a.m. insomniac brainstorms, I had a great idea.... how about sharing the love by bringing Zingerman's to the Twin Cities for all the creative business people here to enjoy? We can all chip in for their training expertise in the comfort of our own hometown.

When I talked to ZingTrain's managing partner Stas Kazmierski, he was very enthused and also familiar with the Twin Cities. Turns out most of the co-ops in town already have their own Zing fan club and have been bringing Zingerman's here for a number of years!

So Stas and I hashed out a plan. If we could get 15 people registered by February 22, Zingerman's will come to Minneapolis on March 25, 2010. They will offer two seminars in one day, "The Art of Giving Great Service" and "Leading with Zing!" Folks can choose to take one seminar or get a great deal if they want to spend a full day attending both seminars.

Update: We reached our goal! Zingerman's is for sure coming to Minneapolis. Register today as space is limited!
